Abstract
A study of the characters used in separating tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), from bollworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), showed that the presence of a process on the mandible was 98% reliable for identifying tobacco budworm larvae which had been fieldcollected on cotton and preserved. This character was not reliable for larvae reared entirely on artificial media or for larvae field-collected on cotton and transferred to media for further development. Microspines on the tubercle on the 8th abdominal segment of the tobacco budworm were 100% reliable as a character to separate the 2 species. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
