Abstract
Failure to obtain psychological and social information regarding a patient with a lethal long-term illness and his family may lead to inappropriate medical decision-making and treatment, and thus result in failure to meet the patient's major needs. The use of simple interviewing techniques by nonpsychiatrist physicians and medical students can yield important information concerned with patient care. This information should become part of the medical record in order to document the data as any other pertinent historical or physical data, to transmit this information to other physicians who may review the medical record, and to serve as a self-imposed discipline as the physician learns to expand his communication with the patient. Keywords
