Abstract
Elderly patients with or without previously diagnosed diabetes mellitus may develop hyperosmolar non-ketotic coma. The characteristics of the syndrome have been outlined. Therapy includes adequate volume replacement with hypotonic saline and careful use of insulin. The occurrence of this syndrome and its role as a variant of diabetic coma are presented because of the potential surgical implications. This publication has 14 references indexed in Scilit:
