Abstract
Three experiments explored the encoding of causal inferences in the memory records for texts. The focus was on a particular class of causal inference: those that link the superordinate goals of characters and the outcomes whereby they are achieved. Two experiments produced evidence that superordinate goal inferences are encoded in the memory records for texts. A third experiment produced evidence about the way these inferences are encoded in text memory records. The results of this experiment suggest that a given superordinate goal inference is represented as a link between the idea units corresponding to the goal in question and the outcome whereby that goal is satisfied. Keywords
