Abstract
Recent changes in family structures, social and economic pressures on families and the growing number of malfunctioning and povertystricken families underline the need for a national family policy in Australia. Policy makers must recognise these developments and identify the likely impact of their decisions on families of differing structure. A focus on national policy may be one way of guaranteeing that our oldest and most important social institution, the family, is not buffeted beyond endurance by social forces that we can in fact control. Keywords
