Abstract
During a four year period at the Gorgas Memorial Hospital, Ancon, Canal Zone, from 1942 to 1946, 3 patients were seen with a black fungous infection on the palm. This condition has been described and studied by several Brazilian workers,1 but has never before been reported from Panama. It is not known to occur in the continental United States. The disease is entirely symptomless and harmless, but deserves reporting as a rare tropical cutaneous disease which is little known and which might be seen in the United States in a soldier or civilian returning from the Panama Canal Zone. The 3 patients were white North Americans. One was a physician in the Health Department of the Canal Zone; 1 was a clerical worker in one of the Zone offices, and the third was a soldier stationed at an Army fort in the Canal Zone.
