Abstract
This paper describes a model reading program for the elderly. The focus is on developing individual and small‐group reading, writing, or discussion activities designed to furnish continuous growth for the aged. Of central importance are literary experiences that elevate older people's values and attitudes, feelings of self worth, sense of humor, and mental and physical development. Interpersonal skills and positive attitudes among professional and volunteer assistants working at this level are stressed. The program encourages the aged to revive dormant interests and to explore new vistas as major prerequisites to personal fulfillment. The goal of the project was to identify a content and instructional plan that motivates the elderly to seek intellectual, physical, or spiritual renewal through reading‐related exercises. Keywords
