Abstract
The supporting tissue in the autonomic ganglia, including the ganglion cell capsule, is made up mainly of cells which are homologous with the neuroglia in the C. N. S. Cytologically, all supporting cells in these ganglia except a limited number which are connective tissue elements appear to be identical with oligodendroglia. Hyperplasia of these cells, including those of the ganglion cell capsule, is found in a high percentage of the human autonomic ganglia examined after surgical removal and autopsy. Similar changes have been induced by faradic stimulation and preganglionic fibers, periganglionic application of alcohol, and subcut. injn. of sterile diphtheria toxin. There is dissolution of the ganglion cell cytoplasm. The changes that follow experimentally applied lesions are similar to those which occur in disease. Keywords
