Patterns of Suicide Among the Elderly in Israel

Abstract
A descriptive analysis of official statistics of completed and attempted suicides of the Jewish elderly in Israel disclosed patterns somewhat different from those known in Western industrial societies. Tentative explanations of these findings on the basis of the historical and social background of Israel were attempted. Some of the social factors affecting these patterns are connected with the large scale immigration to Israel and the age and ethnic composition of Israeli society.
