Abstract
Sexual behaviour and sexuality are currently topical issues of concern for child care social workers. Social workers are spending more and of more of their time with children who come into care because of sexual abuse, or who have an involvement in the ‘rent’ scene or Prostitution. In addition many teenage young women come into care because of social or parental concern over their lsquo;promiscuous’ behaviour. The review of research on adolescent prostitution offers several explanations for involvement in prostitution. which vary according to the discipline of the author. Explanations vary from pathological and personal psychology factors to the wider social aspects of the family and local environment. This literature review was used as a basis for research which examined the incidence of female prostitution for a social services department. This is a relatively new field of interest and consequently there is very little British research published on the issue of adolescent prostitution, or on under age (16) prostitution. There is no published research on girls in care and prostitution. We need to know much more about the reality of young people's lives before social workers can offer a meaningful response.
