Abstract
The role of leukocytes in vitreous membrane formation was examined by injecting leukocytes into the vitreous gel of rabbit eyes. One week following leukocyte injection, membranous material became clearly visible with an ophthalmoscope. Histochemical examination of the membrane showed a large number of leukocytes trapped in an unknown matrix material. Active lymphocytes were observed in the vitreous and on the membrane. Acid phosphatase was markedly increased in the supernatant fraction of centrifuged vitreous, which has a different isoenzyme pattern than that of leukocytes. Keywords
