Tackling staff absenteeism

Abstract
Staff sickness and absenteeism are major problems for most hospitals, 'ibis study attempted to find out the reasons behind absenteeism at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and. in particular, to investigate tlx postulated link with high stress levels. The results support the hypothesis that the stressors nurses face contribute to their absence from work, and a variety of mechanisms to reduce stress levels and improve communication between all grades of staff are suggested. A positive outcome of the study has been a reduction in absenteeism since completion, suggesting that the process of allowing staff to vent their concerns during the survey was in itself therapeutic
