Simplified Hippuran Clearance

Abstract
A method is presented for determining effective renal plasma flowin man utilizing a single injection of Hippuran I131 and 2 plasma samples. The radioactivity remaining in the plasma at 20 and 30 min after injection of the dose is plotted on semi-logarithmic graph paper. The clearance is calculated from the slope of a line connecting these points and the time zero intercept [clearance = [image] (slope) ]. The method has proved accurate and correlates closely with PAH [para-amino-hippurate] clearances (correlation coefficient = 0.90, regression coefficient = 1.02). This simplified single injection clearance is recommended for use in clinical situations where it appears desirable to know the effective renal plasma flow in determining the status of the patients'' renal function, It is also of use in clinical studies where it would be unfeasible to perform standard clearances.
