Abstract
To the Editor: Bone-marrow biopsy is considered to be a relatively innocuous procedure; however, in a recent letter to the Editor (N Engl J Med 285:804. 1971). Fisher described a patient with steroid-induced osteoporosis and renal osteodystrophy in whom biopsy of the posterior iliac-crest marrow resulted in retroperitoneal hemorrhage, which was presumably due to penetration of the bone by the Westerman-Jensen needle.We experienced a similar complication of bone-marrow biopsy, but with more serious sequelae. The patient, an elderly post-menopausal woman who had lymphosarcoma, had been treated with chlorambucil for approximately two years, with complete remission. A new resident on . . .Keywords
