Abstract
This paper describes the piezoelectric results obtained with the piezoelectric composites of lead zirconatetitanate (PZT) and vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene copolymer (VDF/TrFE) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The composite of PZT and VDF/TrFE copolymer (VDF 52 mol%) provides a very large piezoelectric constant (d 31 = - 30 pC/N). As opposed to conventional composites the copolymer in this composite exhibits the piezoelectric response. Polymer matrix in conventional composites, usually, works as only the dielectric material and its piezoelectric contribution is very small. The VDF/TrFE-PZT composite also exhibits similar temperature dependence of d 31, relative dielectric constant (ε′/ε0) and elastic constant c 11 as VDF/TrFE copolymer. In the final section of this paper, the several successful applications of the composite are shown.
