STUDY OF MEDIA FOR THE ESTIMATION OF BACTERIA IN MILK

Abstract
In a comparative study of 5 media to determine the variability of milk counts, both raw and pasteurized milk were used. Veal-infusion agar gave most consistent results but was not sufficiently better to offset the difficulty in preparation. When all factors were considered, standard meat-extract agar, dehydrated nutrient agar and dehydrated peptonized milk agar proved equally satisfactory for routine milk counts. Ayers'' milk-powder agar gave results consistently higher than other media tested. Discordant results in counting bacteria in milk by the agar-plate method are due to errors in technic.
