THE INFLUENCE OF AMMONIUM ION ON THE PLASMA ATABRINE LEVEL AND ON THE URINARY EXCRETION OF ATABRINE

Abstract
The addition in vitro of low concs. of ammonium ion to blood from persons taking atabrine markedly increased the concn. of atabrine in the plasma. As little as 0.3 millimolar added ammonium ion sufficed to change the concn. of atabrine in the plasma from 22 to 50 [gamma]/l. In individuals taking atabrine, the urinary excretion of the drug was closely correlated with the urinary excretion of ammonia. A short period of admn. of ammonium chloride to persons on a constant dosage of atabrine resulted in a temporary 50% increase in plasma atabrine level during or just after the period of ammonium chloride intake.
