A New Stapedectomy Prosthesis

Abstract
The prosthesis is designed as a substitute for the stapes bone following total stapedectomy for otosclerosis. It consists of a metal prosthesis of SMO 316 stainless steel, having at one end a loop for attachment to the incus and, at the other, a piece of dry Gelfoam. The diameter of the steel prosthesis is 0.004 inches, and the shaft is made in lengths of 4, 4.5, and 5 mm. The Gelfoam, which has been firmly knotted to the prosthesis, measures 3×2 mm in size. Dr. Howard House appears to have demonstrated adequately that the tissue membrane which replaces the Gelfoam is adequate protection against bacterial invasion of the inner ear. The insert is removed from the sterile package, and the Gelfoam is grasped in the tips of the gloved thumb and forefinger. Two or three drops of Ringer's, or similar solution, is placed on the Gelfoam with a medicine dropper,
