Abstract
Amphiphilic 1,2-diol derivatives and their acetonides, incorporating rigid aromatic structural units, have been prepared. They exhibit liquid-crystalline behaviour and form stable monolayers at the air/water interface. The force–area isotherms obtained depend largely on the chemical structure of the rigid core. Keywords
