THE EFFECT OF A SINGLE MASSIVE DOSE OF VITAMIN D2 ON YOUNG DOGS

Abstract
Eight young dogs were given a single dose, 314,000 to 530,000 I. U. vit. D/kg. at 4-5 wks. of age. Three died in 2 wks. and a 4th in 5 wks., with the usual symptoms of hypervitaminosis D. After 188 days, a 5th dog was sacrificed, and after 241 days the remaining 3. The serum Ca remained elevated for 6 mos. and Ca and P retentions large after 189 and 238 days. Extensive calcification of lungs and moderate calcification of hearts and kidneys were seen in the surviving group. Malocclusion, pitting and poor development of the teeth occurred in all the dogs, and these conditions were not improved during the recuperative period. These observations are discussed with reference to the single massive dose therapy of rickets.
