Abstract
Radioimmunoassay was used in Odocoileus virginianus. Estrone and estradiol concentrations were similar and remained relatively constant (20-30 pg/ml) in Jan.-March, months 3-5 of gestation, increasing in April and again in May, just before (< 10 days) parturition. Both steroids fell to low levels shortly after parturition. Estrogen levels in captive does during March, April and May did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from those observed in free-ranging deer during the same months. Estrogen levels increase during the last month of gestation. Estrone levels in the deer were higher than those of estradiol during late pregnancy. This relationship was also observed in cows and sheep.
