Influence of the strength of the smectic order on the backbone anisotropy of side-chain liquid crystal polymers as revealed by SANS

Abstract
It is proposed that the strength of the smectic order determines the backbone anisotropy of side-chain liquid crystal polymers. Here this strength increases with the length of the alkyl terminal group of the mesogens. Two liquid crystal polymethacrylates differing only by the mesogenic tails —OCH3 and —OC4H9 are considered. The backbone anisotropy of these polymers is measured by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) whereas the smectic order is evaluated from the intensity of the 001 Bragg peak
