Abstract
Four F3 lines of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., (IR 1,4,5, and 6), that are resistant to the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant, were evaluated in the laboratory and field for resistance to leaf feeding by the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie). In laboratory tests, larvae fed leaves of IR 5,6, and the resistant check, PI 229358, incurred higher combined larval and pupal mortality and weighed less after 14 days than those fed the susceptible check, ‘Forrest’. Under natural field infestation, the incidence of resistance varied greatly among progenies of the 4 lines tested. IR 6 had a high (84%) incidence of resistance among its progeny, but none of the progeny of IR 5 were resistant. Sampling of individual IR 6 progeny rows revealed 2 progeny (5157 and 5176) with larval populations significantly (P = 0.05) less than those on Forrest.
