Jugular Venous Thrombosis

Abstract
Thrombosis of the internal jugular vein (TIJV) was diagnosed by CT [computed tomography] in 5 patients. Clinical presentations included unexplained fever (4 patients), swollen neck (3 patients), and mediastinal widening (1 patient). Factors contributing to TIJV included placement of a central venous catheter (3 patients) and neck surgery (2 patients). In 2 patients left TIJV occurred after right sided venous catheterization. The CT findings consisted of enlargement of the thrombosed vein, a nonenhancing filling defect in the lumen of the affected vessel, an enhancing vessel wall, and opacification of callateral venous channels.
