Abstract
117 pupils from the 2d grade public school of 5 Texas towns were compared to 115 controls. Tests of speech sound discrimination and written spelling performance were administered to the groups before and after the experimental group had received 14 hours of phonic training. Written spelling performance improved significantly with this method of training. Speech-sound discriminative ability increased significantly. Written spelling and speech-sound discrimination are significantly related variables.
