Optic Atrophy Following Caldwell-Luc Procedure

Abstract
Two reports of cases are presented in which the patients had a Caldwell-Luc procedure with irrigation and packing of the maxillary antrum for treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Both developed complications in the immediate postoperative period which resulted in complete optic atrophy, enophthalmos, ptosis of the globe, and complete restriction of the extraocular muscle function which is similar to the findings of a complicated blowout fracture of the orbit. The possible mechanisms of this complication are discussed.
