Meningoencephalitis in Turkeys Experimentally Infected with Ornithosis

Abstract
Meningitis or meningoencephalitis occurred in 5 of 20 turkeys infected by exposure to sheep experimentally infected with virulent ornithosis virus. Microscopic lesions consisted of fibrinopurulent meningitis, endothelial hyperplasia, perivascular cuffing, and, in the more severe cases, neural edema and neuronal degeneration. Typical elementary bodies were demonstrated in the cytoplasm of histiocytes in the meningeal exudate.
