Abstract
The synthesis of the alkaloid cryptopleurine has been accomplished by a sequence involving as the key step the cyclization of amino acid XII. It was established that the approach is applicable to the synthesis of simpler phenanthroquinolizidines such as IV. The biogenesis of the alkaloid is briefly discussed. Keywords
