Abstract
In adult female rats fed purified diets consisting solely of sucrose, casein or margarine fat, length of survival was detd. after thyroxin admn. and after prolonged exposure to low environmental temps. The rats fed sucrose or margarine fat lived significantly longer after thyroxin admn. than those fed casein. When saline soln. was administered in place of the thyroxin, no significant difference in length of survival was observed. At an environmental temp. of 2[degree]C following previous exposure to low environmental temps., rats fed sucrose or margarine fat lived significantly longer than those fed casein; at 23[degree]C no significant difference in survival time was noted. Keywords
