New Phlebotomine Sand Fly Colonies: Rearing Phlebotomus Martini, Sergentomyia Schwetzi, and Sergentomyia Africana (Diptera: Psychodidae)1

Abstract
A closed laboratory colony of Phlebotomus martini (Diptera: Psychodidae), a vector of Leishmania donovani in Kenya, has been maintained for 5 generations. Initiated with 12 females, the colony produced over 1000 adults in the 5th generation. Techniques used to rear P. martini proved equally successful with 2 other sand fly species, Sergentomyia schwetzi and Sergentomyia africana, demonstrating the suitability of the described method for rearing various genera of sand flies. Observations are provided on blood feeding, mating behavior, and infection of colonized flies with L. donovani via membrane feeding.This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
