Abstract
Before the introduction of Co therapy an early laryngeal carcinoma was usually removed by laryngectomy. Patients who refused surgery, or whose growth was too far advanced for surgery, had either radical or palliative deep X-ray therapy. Now most of the early cases are treated by Co therapy and the expected improvement in results is clinically apparent. In order to confirm this a Boag test was carried out on a group of patients treated between 1955 and 1958 of whom 79% received Co60 treatment. The result of this test is compared with the 5-year survival rate of a group treated between 1948 and 1953. The 5-year survival rate of the 1955 -8 group estimated with the help of the Boag test yields 50% compared with the 32% 5-year survival rate of the 1948-53 group. Keywords
