Abstract
Operative Procedures in Cleft PalateThe evidence for and against early closure of the palate has been discussed. The practice among most surgeons in New England is to perform the operation between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four months. Good speech, which is the prime objective in palate closure, depends on a soft palate of sufficient length and mobility that closure of the nasopharynx is possible by virtue of contact between the soft palate and the posterior and lateral pharyngeal walls.
