Abstract
We study the characteristics of self-generated zonal flows as observed in nonlinear global gyrokinetic simulations of toroidal ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence for typical parameters of DIII-D core plasmas. In addition, we discuss various possibilities for experimental measurements and the development of new diagnostics. Keywords
