Abstract
This review examined and synthesized progress in describing the anatomical, physiological and neurohumoral substrates of neural systems which modulate pain perception. Emphasis was placed on a neural system which can be activated by electrical stimulation of certain brain stem structures and by narcotic analgesic drugs. Recent evidence showing that other neural systems are important in the modulation of pain was also considered. This publication has 74 references indexed in Scilit:
