Abstract
We have allowed the liberal use of antiseptics for wound care to become an established practice with little consideration of any toxicity on exposed healing tissues. The care of open wounds and chronic ulcers is largely delegated to nursing staff with little help or advice from their medical colleagues. Alexander Fleming felt that antiseptics would only be of benefit in septic wounds if they stimulated or conserved natural defence mechanisms! He also regarded the assessment of tissue toxicity as being more important than any antimicrobial effect but there has been little research into this field. Keywords
