Abstract
Presentation of Case First admission. A 68-year-old man was admitted to a veterans' hospital because of nausea, vomiting and anorexia of one week's duration.Three days before entry he noticed increasing abdominal distention and obstipation. He had previously been well. He had consumed large quantities of alcohol.The patient was alert and complained of abdominal distress. The lungs were clear, and the heart was normal. The abdomen was distended and doughy; mild periumbilical tenderness was elicited; the bowel sounds were high-pitched.
