Relationship of Hematocrit Values to Selected Physiological Conditions in Dairy Cattle

Abstract
Jugular vein blood from 236 Guernsey cows was analyzed for hematocrit reading quarterly and related to physiological conditions of animals. Hematocrit values averaged 33.8 with a range of 19.5 to 42.5. Hematocrit values were observed to change during lactation and pregnancy. Neither bodyweight nor milk production level were related to hematocrit readings. Seasonal changes were demonstrated. Hematocrit values were lower in older animals. An effect of sires was found. Concentrations of TCA soluble whole blood minerals were correlated with hematocrit readings for lactating cows. Copyright © 1969. American Society of Animal Science .
