Abstract
Three studies examined the effects of stress on cigarette smoking and on urinary pH. Study I employed 45 students who underwent manipulated stress; Study II utilized 10 Ss who included graduate students undergoing oral and written PhD examinations and assistant and senior professors delivering colloquium lectures; Study III used 10 students attending their first advanced undergraduate seminar. Cigarette smoking was found to increase with manipulated stress. Acidification of the urine accompanied the stresses endemic to academia (e.g., delivering lectures, taking examinations).
