Synergistic Lethal Action of Certain Radioisotopes in Rats

Abstract
Previous studies concerning the lethal effect of combinations of radioisotopes indicated that simultaneous admn. of P32 and Au198 was more effective than admn. of either agent independently. Other combinations including Sr 89, 90 and X-rays have been investigated using Carworth Farms stock male rats. If the combination resulted in a mortality larger than the summation of mortalities produced by each of the agents singly, potentiation was considered to be a synergistic effect due to injury of 2 organ systems. The reticulo-endothelial and hematopoietic systems seem to be of primary importance in such synergistic effects. Simple additivity was found if the effect concerned the same organ system. As shown, P32 and Au198 combinations resulted in a potentiation of the lethal effect (synergism), while simple additivity occurred with the combination of P32 and Sr89, 90. Combination of X-rays with p32 resulted in an additive or lesser effect, while X-rays combined with Au98 were definitely synergistic.
