Peculiar Focal Myocardial Degeneration and Fatal Ventricular Arrhythmias in a Child

Abstract
A 16-month-old child died with ventricular arrhythmias associated with peculiar focal myocardial lesions characterized by myofilament dissolution and mitochondrial hyperplasia.Case ReportA 16-month-old girl (J.H.H. 141 06 28) was in excellent health until a 4-hour episode of rapid pulse, vomiting, cyanosis and pallor occurred. A similar episode occurred 1 week later. An electrocardiogram was interpreted as showing supraventricular tachycardia (rate of 320 per minute). Carotid-sinus massage was unsuccessful, but sinus rhythm was restored 4 hours after intramuscular digoxin (45 μg per kilogram of body weight).
