Investigations on Bacterial Flagella.

Abstract
Flagella are separated from bacterial bodies by shaking followed by a series of purification steps involving differential centrifugation. Chemical analyses of flagella from Proteus vulgaris and Bacillus subtilis are given. Flagella are at least 95% protein. X-ray investigations show that flagella are of the k-m-e-f group of fibrous proteins, showing the alpha-keratin pattern in the native state. Electron micro-graphs show a thickness of 120 A.
