Abstract
The postoperative development of speech fluency in 68 laryngectomized patients is reported. Tests of speech proficiency were carried out at the termination of speech training and again in a katamnestlc investigation 9-18 months later. The qualitative evaluation of esophageal speech is based on the award of grades for which definite criteria were laid down. Most patients who had mastered esophageal speech had improved further, while some patients had subsequently learned esophageal speech by themselves. The investigation of some factors which might be related to failure to learn esophageal speech showed that its acquisition was equally probable at all ages, while a significant difference in learning esophageal speech was found between patients who had been irradiated and those who had not. Keywords
