Abstract
Used the wrong telephone number technique to investigate the emotional tone or impact of the help-seeking message as a variable mediating the help seeker and potential benefactor interaction. Help seekers of high, low, or ambiguous status delivered 1 of 3 messages (positive appeal, negative appeal, or simple request) to 432 adult Ss of either high or low status. The frequency of the requested helping response was significantly affected by the message variations, but this effect was confounded by a significant Subject Status * Help-Seeker Status * Message Type interaction. Data also reveal that the message effect was limited to the ambiguous-status caller and opposite-status conditions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)Keywords
