Abstract
The effect on the urinary bladder epithelium of a single intraperitoneal dose (200 mg/kg) of cyclophosphamide was tested in male and female rats of Fischer 344 and Carworth Farm Norwegian (CFN) strains. There were marked differences in response to the drug according to sex. In the female, the initial epithelial necrosis was less extensive, epithelial regeneration was more rapid, and subsequent hyperplasia and atypia were less pronounced and of shorter duration. One week after injection, the histology of the bladder epithelium was close to normal in the female, whereas in the male the epithelium was still markedly hyperplastic and atypical. Although the hyperplasia post cyclophosphamide administration was somewhat more pronounced in the Fischer rats of both sexes, as compared with the CFN rats, the differences were not significant.
