Abstract
A general formula is given for γ2, the square anisotropy of the polarizability of a molecule, in terms of bond polarizabilities and angles between bonds. Expressions are derived for 〈γ2〉, the average over configurations, for a chain of N axially symmetric units. This is done for the freely jointed model and for the diamond-lattice model. The formulas are valid for small N as well as for large N. For both models 〈γ2〉 increases linearly with N for large N.Keywords
