Objectivity in observation

Abstract
The use of observation as a method of data collection has been criticised for its potential for distortion (1). There is therefore a need for the researcher to consider potential sources of bias (Box 1) and attempt to make the observation as objective as possible. Some of the key factors which may introduce bias include the observer, the research subjects and the research instrument; this article looks at ways of counteracting these biases during the planning, implementation and data analysis stages of the observation.
