Abstract
A decent respect for the two editorials1inThe Journaland the resolutions of the Chicago and the Illinois State medical societies would be sufficient reason for presenting this rather voluminous paper, if the importance of the matter concerned did not command it. In 1926 and again in 1927, attention was called2to the prevalence of puerperal infections in the maternity wards of general hospitals, and both architectural and administrative isolation of infected cases was recommended. In 1932, theLadies' Home Journalprinted a popular life of Semmelweis by de Kruif3in which the Lying-in Hospital and my convictions were mentioned and which elicited the editorials and resolutions referred to. This article is my reply. In order to present to the profession a perfectly unbiased view of the situation, I asked Dr. Heinz Siedentopf to study the literature and write a paper for me on his objectiveKeywords
