Abstract
Cells of regenerating livers require at least two steps preparatory to entering S stage to start the DNA-synthesis. One of the steps is synthesis of enzymes involved in DNA-synthesis, and the other is an alteration of the structure of deoxyribonucleoprotein, which is reflected by the priming ability in vitro. Irradiation interferes with these two processes, thus preventing the cells from synthesizing the DNA. The rate of DNA-synthesis in the S stage cell in vivo is related to the level of DNA-synthesizing enzymes estimated in in vitro studies. However, the priming ability of nuclei, estimated in vitro, had little relationship to the rate of DNA-synthesis in vivo.
