Abstract
The activity of urease throughout the life history of the soy bean plant was detd. by quantitative methods and histological staining reagents for the enzymes. A descr. is given of the changes in urease of individual plant structures. The changes are common not only to Soja but to the Papilionaceae in general. The role of urease in intermediary metabolism is considered; thermodynamic data indicate that urease does not function in the synthesis of urea but solely in its hydrolysis. Data do not indicate that urease is transported from one part of a plant to another. Analyses of fresh tissues of soy bean seeds at different stages of development, and of the germinating seeds, are given for amino-N, ammonia, titrable acidity and for urease, protease and lipase activities. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
