Crime and the Elderly: The Relationship Between Risk and Fear

Abstract
The present investigation utilized data from a Los Angeles community survey of 1,269 people between the ages of 45 and 74 to investigate the relationship between the elderly's concern with crime and the neighborhood's crime rate. The present research demonstrates a clear relationship between risk of victimization (crime rates) and fear of crime. Further investigation revealed that the association between risk and fear is stronger for Anglos than for Blacks and Mexican Americans. The implications of these findings for crime prevention among the old are discussed.
